There is an extensive use of cross-bunkers as well as the shorter holes have numerous bunkers making tee placement a more important consideration. These courses were involved in an Eco-hydrological study, focusing upon the chemical composition of the groundwater, historical analysis of vegetation composition and management trials looking at site-specific management regimes which encourage native sward development. The tee shot which again plays back into the prevailing wind pushes the player to the right when the shortest line is down the left. I can completely understand why many view this as the top golf course in England. Many holes feature blind or partially blind shots, although the unfairness element has been reduced somewhat, after several 20th century modifications. It had been due to take place at nearby Royal Cinque Ports, but abnormally high tides caused severe flooding to the course and The Open was switched to St. George’s as a result. At the green on the right is a deep bunker and on the left is Duncan’s hollow, named after George Duncan who took three to get down and missed a playoff by a stroke in the 1922 Open. The Adizero golf shoe, manufactured by Adidas, features an aggressive cleat/stud which can do very noticeable damage to greens, particularly in damp conditions. I was captivated by the rolling fairways, the bunker on four, the approach shot through the high dunes on five, the splendid par 3 sixth hole, eight, ten, fourteen, and the three finishing holes. The fairway is bonkers with huge undulations running through it and these undulations have an impact on what ball flight you can choose for the approach. However, I just wanted to get out there, experience the wind, the architecture and history, walking in the footsteps of our game’s pioneers and champions. But you would be hard-pushed to find a more popular Champion Golfer at St. George’s than Darren Clarke, who prevailed on his 20th Open appearance on the Claret Jug’s last visit to Kent. If you clear the bunker you are left with an approach shot of 200 yards with a likely uneven stance going up having to clear the massive hollow fronting the green which almost resembles a wall. At Old head you are often aware of the cliffs. The ninth is strategically bunkered down the length of it with two raised bunkers in a dune left of the green being the ones I have found to be the most difficult.
